Metalsmithing & Jewelry Construction

The versatility of metal as a medium for jewelry, hollowware, and small sculpture is boundless. It is a material that can be bent and moved into shapes as easily as clay or can be rigid and steadfast as stone. This studio will examine these qualities in metal through the fabrication techniques of heat soldering and cold attachments, simple metal forging and forming, stone setting, metal inlay, and the coloring of metal.

You will learn about the working characteristics of precious and non-precious metals and how to utilize surface embellishments such as chasing and repousse. A unique opportunity to develop a broad-based foundation in metalsmithing and jewelry with an emphasis throughout the summer on designing objects of personal meaning.
