Program Format

Studio Time

Mornings are devoted to one studio (three hours), most of the afternoon (three hours again) to your second studio. "Open" studio time is scheduled late afternoons and evenings, giving you an opportunity to continue along on pieces begun earlier in the day and to work and explore on your own. Considerable independence is given to all students in managing time, with the foundation of the program resting on each persons' strong sense of commitment to themselves and their work. Our small size creates an atmosphere that is flexible and spontaneous.

Evenings

Volleyball or softball games are traditional after dinner and are characterized by a tone of informality and warmth. Cool nights lend themselves to a bonfire with singing and conversation and Saturday evening, though the activities may change, often ends up with an extravaganza of homemade ice cream churned by an assortment of Snow Farm people.

Weekends

Although the week is full and fast-paced, Sundays are nonstudio days and give you a chance to see more of Massachusetts and New England. There are frequent trips to craft-related settings such as the Berkshire Craft Fair, artists' studios, and galleries. Other Sundays offer a change, perhaps to day trip to lower New Hampshire, or to visit Tanglewood Music Festival or the Smith College Museum of Art.

Freedom AND Responsibility

We are a small community in which each person's students as well as faculty, has the opportunity to influence the flow of day-to-day life and activities. Participants are always encouraged to voice their ideas and opinions. Your input is valued; we want to be responsive to your interests. We expect that you, in turn, will contribute your enthusiasm for and commitment to all phases of the Snow Farm program.

Some Rules

Drinking and the use of unprescribed drugs are contrary to the spirit of Snow Farm. Snow Farm absolutely prohibits any student from using alcohol or drugs unless prescribed by a physician. Snow Farm will not deviate from this policy. Anyone breaking this rule will be required to leave the program immediately. Moreover, any student who is found in the presence of any individual(s) who possesses or is using drugs or alcohol will be required to leave the program immediately. It is our firm policy that any student who is required to leave MUST DO SO WITHIN A FEW HOURS after notification from the High School Director, regardless of the distance needed to travel. To expedite departure, Snow Farm reserves the right to arrange transportation for the departing individual with the student's parent or guardian responsible for any and all transportation or extra staffing costs. Our emphasis at Snow Farm is on creating an atmosphere in which individual decision making is encouraged within the guidelines of common sense, thoughtfulness, self-discipline, respect and safety.
